Cement blankets are a type of specialized engineering composite material featuring a three-dimensional structure. They are composed of a composite of cementitious materials—such as specialized cement and aggregates—and a three-dimensional fiber matrix. Upon hydration and hardening, the product exhibits the excellent physical properties and durability characteristic of composite materials. It is widely used in fields such as water conservancy, railways, highways, environmental remediation, slope stabilization, and structural protection, serving primary functions such as seepage prevention, lining, and emergency repair.
I. What is a cement blanket?
It is a flexible, cement-impregnated fabric that undergoes a hydration reaction upon contact with water, hardening into a thin, durable, waterproof, and fire-resistant concrete layer.
The cement blanket utilizes a 3D fiber matrix woven from polyethylene and polypropylene filaments, incorporating a specially formulated dry concrete mix. The primary chemical constituents of the calcium aluminate cement are Al2O3, CaO, SiO2, and Fe2O3. The underside of the fabric is coated with a PVC backing to ensure the material is completely waterproof. During on-site installation, no concrete mixing equipment is required; one simply needs to spray water onto the material or immerse it in water to trigger hydration. Once hardened, the fibers reinforce the concrete, preventing cracking. Currently, cement blankets are available in a thickness of 10mm.
II. Product advantages of cement blankets
Key features of cement blankets:
1) Ease of use
Cement blankets can be supplied in large rolls, facilitating manual handling and transport without the need for heavy lifting machinery. The concrete mix is scientifically proportioned, eliminating the need for on-site mixing and preventing issues related to over-hydration. Cement blankets can set and harden effectively in various environments, including underwater and in seawater. 2) Rapid Setting and Hardening
Once hydrated, the material remains workable for up to two hours, allowing for necessary adjustments to its size and shape. It achieves 80% of its final strength within 24 hours. Special formulations are also available to meet specific user requirements for rapid or delayed setting times.
3) Environmentally Friendly
This is a low-mass, low-carbon technology; for many applications, it requires up to 95% less material than conventional concrete. Its limited alkalinity and very low washout rate result in minimal impact on the local ecosystem.
4) Application Flexibility
The material offers excellent drape, allowing it to conform to complex surface geometries—including double-curved shapes. Before setting, it can be easily cut or trimmed using standard hand tools.
5) High Material Strength
The fibers within the material reinforce its strength and prevent cracking; they also absorb impact energy, ensuring a stable failure mode.
6) Long-term Durability
The material exhibits excellent chemical resistance and withstands weathering; it does not degrade under UV exposure from sunlight.
7) Waterproof Properties
The underside features a polyolefin (PVC) backing that renders it completely waterproof and further enhances its chemical resistance.
8) Fire Resistance
The material is non-combustible and offers excellent fire-retardant properties; it produces minimal smoke and negligible hazardous gas emissions when exposed to fire. It has achieved the B-s1, d0 rating under European fire safety standards for construction materials.
