Weed control fabric consists of black or green woven strips interlaced both lengthwise and crosswise. It blocks sunlight from reaching the weeds beneath, thereby preventing photosynthesis and inhibiting weed growth; additionally, it is resistant to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and mold. By employing this physical method of weed control, weed growth is significantly suppressed, reducing or even eliminating the need for chemical herbicides and lowering labor and mechanical weeding costs. It mitigates the adverse effects of weeds on crop growth while enhancing soil fertility, conserving soil and water, and improving the agricultural ecosystem. Furthermore, it is simple to use, easily accepted by farmers, and holds excellent prospects for widespread adoption.
As a material for suppressing weeds and maintaining a tidy ground surface, weed control fabric is widely used in outdoor potted flower cultivation, nurseries, large-scale landscaping, and viticulture; it has become an integral part of high-standard cultivation practices in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. Using this fabric saves substantial costs and time associated with ground surfacing and construction. When combined with appropriate base-layer preparation, it not only stabilizes the soil and ground surface but also facilitates effective drainage and weed suppression.
The fabric can also be used to protect tree root zones; applying it around the base of a tree effectively inhibits weed growth, thereby minimizing the loss of nutrients and moisture from the root area. Designed for this specific purpose, the fabric comes in sheets or strips featuring pre-marked cutting lines—such as cross (+), T-shaped, or I-shaped patterns—to facilitate planting. After the tree is planted, these cut lines are heat-sealed to ensure the fabric's structural integrity and functionality.
Weed control fabric can also be used to wrap tree root balls during transplantation. This suppresses weed growth and prevents unproductive root development while ensuring adequate air and water permeability. Additionally, the fabric protects the root system from external damage during transport and temporary storage.
Functions of weed control fabric:
1. Prevents weed growth on the ground surface. 2. Promptly drain surface water and keep the ground clean.
3. Promote root growth and prevent root rot.
4. Prevent excessive root growth from potted plants and improve plant quality.
5. Facilitate cultivation management.
Applications in Greenhouses
Inside greenhouses, horticultural ground cover is primarily used in three ways: full-area ground protection, localized ground protection, and as a base layer for cultivation beds.
1. Full-area ground protection: The greenhouse floor is completely covered with the material. This method is used for soilless cultivation of vegetables and flowers, as well as for potted crops. The ground cover is laid directly on the greenhouse floor, eliminating the need for additional flooring construction. Crop placement can be precisely aligned using the markings on the fabric. Growers sometimes spread a layer of fine sand (approximately 20 mm thick) over the fabric to protect it or to increase water retention on its surface.
2. Localized ground protection: This method is primarily used in conjunction with cultivation beds to prevent weed growth beneath the beds, which could otherwise harbor diseases. Laying ground cover beneath the beds is one of the most common practices in Chinese greenhouses; this approach also reduces water accumulation under the beds (especially during overhead irrigation), thereby helping to regulate humidity within the greenhouse.
3. Cultivation bed base layer: The ground cover can also be laid directly on the surface of the cultivation bed to serve as a support layer. This simplifies the bed's support structure and makes it suitable for use with various types of cultivation containers.
Installation Considerations:
1. Material overlapping: Since the ground cover comes in fixed widths, overlapping along the width is necessary to ensure continuity during use. The overlap length should be at least 10 cm for indoor applications and 20 cm for outdoor applications. For indoor use, simply laying the sheets so they overlap is sufficient, whereas outdoor installations benefit from additional securing measures.
2. Base layer preparation: To ensure good water and air permeability, a flat surface, and adequate surface strength, the underlying ground must be properly prepared before laying the ground cover. Typically, a layer of coarse sand approximately 10 cm thick should be laid beneath the ground cover fabric. Coarse sand is highly suitable as a base layer due to its robust aggregate structure, high porosity, and resistance to deformation under external loads. The treatment method for the area beneath the coarse sand depends on local soil conditions. If the soil is firm and has good permeability, the coarse sand layer can be laid directly on the surface; otherwise, a 10–15 cm layer of gravel or pebbles should be placed beneath the sand to ensure proper drainage for the base and sufficient surface strength, thereby facilitating the placement of crops and the movement of workers.
